Pakicetus was adapted for life both on the shore and in the water. It mostly waded around in freshwater where it hunted for fish. Its hearing mechanism is the only known intermediate between that of land mammals and aquatic cetaceans. Length: 1.5 m. Period: Paleogene, 50 million years ago.
